Book Ya Ya is an online marketplace where authors can offer live appearances online (using videoconference technology) or in-person.
Sign up to create an account. Fill in your Profile and Author Page. While you are required to identify your prices for the five different types of events, please note only Single Ticket online events are currently possible as a result of social distancing.
Yes, you must if you want to receive inquiries. Please note that Stripe is Book Ya Ya’s online banking provider and banking information is going to Stripe, not Book Ya Ya.
You have seven days before inquiries and bookings expire.
You will need a laptop or device that has high-speed internet connectivity, a camera and a microphone. Most modern laptops and smartphones will suffice. You’ll need a high-speed internet connection and a power source for your device. We suggest you select a quiet and comfortable location.
While there is no set format for events, please note that they last one hour and you are the moderator. Typical events include a reading with a Q&A session, or discussing your book with a book club. But most important, have fun connecting with your readers.
We’ve created two pricing tiers for you to differentiate your rates: Professional and Book Club. There is also the Single Ticket price which is what you will charge when a user joins your online live video event. Keep in mind that you will set the minimum number of participants.
Yes. Book Ya Ya allows you to post upcoming Single Ticket events.
We suggest you set your rate at what you intend to charge. However, when you receive an inquiry, you will have the ability to revise your price, if you decide to do that. You can discuss and agree upon an adjusted price using messaging within Book Ya Ya. Once the revised price is set, click Suggest Changes to send a revised proposal to the inquirer.
Send the reader a message to agree to a different time or date, then click on Suggest Changes to send the revised proposal back to the reader. When they agree to the revised proposal you’ll get a booking request back from them.
Please message each buyer an explanation of your cancellation and notify us at email@example.com with the subject line ‘cancellation’ and we’ll issue refunds.
Creating an account and using Book Ya Ya is free. When you complete a transaction with a buyer, a 10% service fee paid to Book Ya Ya will be deducted from your total.
Book Ya Ya uses Stripe for payment processing. Transfer of funds after a booking usually takes 7-10 business days for your first transaction and a shorter period thereafter.
Yes, we suggest you follow the procedure to get the identity checkmark to eliminate the chance someone might commit fraudulent identity use.
No, the Booking Agreement is the standard agreement for transactions within Book Ya Ya. If you’d like us to consider any changes, send them to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘appearance agreement.’
Book Ya Ya does not currently support deposits. Book Ya Ya currently supports full payment at the time of booking for each live event.
We do not currently support recording the online video events.
In accordance with the law, it is your responsibility to report all income as well as pay any local taxes. Please consult with your tax advisor for the reporting requirements.
There are two options. You can either start a new event with the author, or buy a Single Ticket to an already-scheduled upcoming event. To start a new event, navigate to their Author Page, select Single Ticket, choose the date and time you want and click on Inquire. The author will receive your inquiry and either decline or accept, and perhaps send you a message. If they accept, you’ll receive a request to enter your payment info to book the event. To join an already-scheduled Single Ticket event, you can either navigate to their Author Page, and scroll down to see the author’s Upcoming Single Ticket Events, or you can use the Search page. From each Single Ticket Event listing page you can purchase a ticket. Each Single Ticket Event has a minimum number of participants set by the author.
Due to isolation from the Covid-19 pandemic, the only events possible are Single Ticket events. Single Ticket events are events where you can purchase access to a live online videoconference with the author that will include other participants at the event.
Single Ticket. Single Ticket permits you to purchase one ticket and use your own laptop or device. Book Club means you’ll all get together in one room with one screen.
Go to your Profile picture on the top right of the Book Ya Ya website, and click on your Inbox. Once inside, click on the message called “Booking.” Scroll down to find the grey video screen. It will go live at the scheduled event time. When asked, please make sure to give your screen access to your camera and microphone.
Mark the date in your calendar and give yourself a reminder. We recommend a minimum internet speed of 1.5 Mbps up/down. Check that the camera and microphone on your device work. Close other videoconference apps that might monopolize your camera or microphone. While all browsers should work, we have found the Chrome browser to be the most friendly with our video communication provider. If you plan on using a mobile device you will need to download the Jitsi Meet app.
If you’re on a Mac, you may need to go into System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Camera (or microphone or accessibility) and grant permission to Jitsi (the videoconference app). Then return to the Book Ya Ya website, Inbox and message with the Jitsi screen and make sure you’ve allowed it access to your camera and microphone.

No worries. Many participants will have not read the book, and writers love to meet new readers.
Mute your microphone while the author is speaking, be polite, raise your hand if you want to ask a question, unmute when called upon, and please be patient. All users are subject to the whims of the bandwidth gods.
No problem, but please identify yourself, and your organization to the author by messaging and selecting Professional. Organizations include corporations, festivals, book stores, libraries, conferences, reading series, etc. You can easily communicate with the author using messaging within the Book Ya Ya website. All transactions must take place within Book Ya Ya
