I’ve written for many publications, including The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe Magazine, The New York Observer, Fortune, Forbes, Barron’s, Fast Company, Money, Worth, Bloomberg Markets, The (London) Spectator, The (London) Independent Magazine, and The Economist. While living in London, I edited the European, Middle Eastern and African editions of Time, which had more than half a million subscribers. Before that, I lived in Hong Kong, where I edited the Asian edition of Time during a period in which it won many awards. I’ve also been an Editor-at-Large for Bloomberg. Over the last two decades, I’ve reported in places as diverse as China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, South Africa, the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, France, Monaco, Poland, Italy, and Russia. I’ve interviewed Presidents, Prime Ministers, multi-billionaires, inventors, criminals, authors, and the CEOs of some of the world’s largest companies. I’ve also interviewed many of the world’s best investors, exploring in depth the question of what qualities and insights enable them to achieve enduring success. I’ve written extensively about investing for many publications and have been interviewed about the greatest investors for magazines, newspapers, podcasts, radio, and television. I wrote and edited a book entitled The Great Minds of Investing, which was published in May 2015. It features profiles of 33 famous investors, including Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Irving Kahn, Howard Marks, Bill Ackman, Joel Greenblatt, Francis Chou, Marty Whitman, Bill Nygren, Jean-Marie Eveillard, Donald Yacktman, Paul Tudor Jones, Arnold Van Den Berg, Mario Gabelli, Bill Miller, and Mohnish Pabrai. I wrote 22 of the profiles and edited 11 of them. All of these profiles are accompanied by stunning portraits created by Michael O’Brien, one of America’s pre-eminent photographers. As a co-author, I’ve collaborated on several books. I worked closely with a renowned hedge fund manager, Guy Spier, helping him to write his remarkable memoir, The Education of a Value Investor: My Transformative Quest for Wealth, Wisdom, and Enlightenment. Published in 2014, the book was hailed by Forbes.com as “the most interesting investment book this year,” The Financial Times praised it as “highly readable,” and it has received over 250 five-star reviews on Amazon. I’ve also collaborated on the upcoming autobiography of a legendary collector who owns more than 25,000 works of art. Born and raised in London, I studied English literature at Oxford University and received my Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. I live in New York with my wife, Lauren, and our teenage children, Henry and Madeleine.
Praise for The Great Minds of Investing: "This is a beautifully written book that offers a rare depth of insight into the lives and minds of the greatest investors of our time. And it is a showcase for William Green who has drawn deeply on 20 years of experience as a writer and editor for publications like Time, Forbes, Money, Bloomberg Markets and Fortune. During that time, he has spent countless hours interviewing many of the world’s great investors. This book benefits from Green’s desire, through careful contemplation, to understand the essential aspects of habit, personality and temperament that make these great investors who they are. This book needs to be on every serious investor’s bookshelf and should be reviewed and re-read regularly." -- Guy Spier, Manager of the Aquamarine Fund and author of The Education of a Value Investor. "The Great Minds of Investing is one of the most profound collections of investment insights and gripping photographs I have come across during my 30-plus years of value investing. Michael O’Brien has captured the spirit and essence of the characters featured in the book. As sharp an interpretation as O'Brien's photographs provide, so too does William Green’s written expression of the investors' varied backgrounds, philosophies and approaches. Each profile features aspects often not known and often not expected from the investors. This makes for as startling and engaging a reaction to the written word as that which the reader takes from the photographs. Altogether an elegant and thoroughly engaging treatment of a subset of today’s finest investors. I heartily recommend the book to all with an interest in the craft of investing." --Thomas A.
